The Mop ist ein Programm, das für das Reinigen der Festplatte Ihres Computers vom sogenannten Schutt entwickelt ist. Den "Schutt" sind die dienstlichen Dateien, die sich den Raum auf der Festplatte leihen, aber werden von keinem Programm verwendet. Das typische Beispiel solcher Dateien sind die zeitweiligen Dateien, die von einer praktisch beliebigen modernen Anlage (zum Beispiel geschaffen sind, Microsoft Word oder Excel). Anderes Beispiel sind die *.gid-dateien, die bei der Durchsicht der Dateien des informationssystems *.hlp geschaffen sind.
